Accounting, tax & bookkeeping firms
IT and cybersecurity for accounting and bookkeeping firms
Protect client data, stay compliant without the stress, and keep your firm running through tax season.
Your firm holds exactly what attackers want
Social Security numbers, bank accounts, and tax returns make accounting, tax, and bookkeeping firms a prime target, especially between January and April, when a lost day hurts most.
We help you stay compliant, without the stress
Tax and accounting professionals are increasingly expected to have a real security program in place. You don't need to become a compliance expert to get there — we handle the technical side and explain the rest in plain language.
- A written security plan with the safeguards regulators expect: multi-factor sign-in, encryption, and a named person responsible for security (this is what the FTC Safeguards Rule requires of tax preparers)
- Guidance based on IRS recommendations for protecting taxpayer data, including help putting together a Written Information Security Plan (WISP) if your firm needs one
- Documentation you can show if a client, insurer, or regulator asks what you're doing to protect their data
What we take care of
- Multi-factor sign-in for every user
- Encrypted laptops and secure remote access
- 24/7 threat monitoring
- Backups of client files and tax data
- Secure file sharing instead of email attachments
- Support for your tax, accounting, and bookkeeping software (QuickBooks and others)
- Business phone service, with voicemail to email and digital fax for signed tax documents
- Pre-season checkups before filing season starts
- Phishing training around tax-season scams
Questions
IT for accounting firms: FAQs
Does the FTC Safeguards Rule apply to small tax practices?
Tax preparation firms are generally covered. Some requirements are relaxed for firms that maintain information on fewer than 5,000 consumers, but core safeguards like a written plan, access controls, and multi-factor authentication still apply. We'll help you understand what applies to your firm.
We're a bookkeeping firm, not a tax preparer. Does this still apply to us?
The FTC Safeguards Rule specifically covers tax preparers, but any business handling client financial data benefits from the same safeguards: secure sign-ins, encryption, and tested backups. We'll put good security in place either way, and tell you plainly which specific rules do or don't apply to your firm.
Can you help us write our WISP?
Yes. We document the technical safeguards we put in place and help you complete a written information security plan based on IRS guidance. Your firm stays responsible for the plan, and we make the technical part accurate.
What if something breaks during tax season?
We schedule maintenance and upgrades outside filing season, check everything before it starts, and prioritize our accounting clients' issues when deadlines are close.
